The basic rights of children fall within the ambit of the changes envisaged to improve the living standards of all South African citizens. This is the second book in a series that offers a socio-educational perspective on the problems faced by black South African children and their parents. Many of us are unaware of the magnitude of these problems and frustrations, and this situation must be remedied. The academics and researchers who have written this book are concerned for the future of the country and seek to disseminate information so that plans for change can be based on facts rather than on perceptions. This book addresses the problems associated with : the culture of poverty; multiculturality in education and in society; the value of promoting the retention of family units; black latchkey children; abuse of black children; and the issue of AIDS among black children. 1. Concepts of social issues. 2. The phenomenon of a 'culture of poverty' in contemporary society. 3. The educational and training implications of a culture of poverty. 4. Assisting the black child in crisis. 5. Understanding the multicultural classroom. 6. Multicultural education, anti-racist practice and early childhood education in the South African context. 7. The family as a source of support in education. 8. Black latchkey children in South Africa : social, educational and practical implications. 9. The abused black child in socio-educational perspective. 10. South African adolescents and AIDS-related issues. |
