The pictures have been used so often that, like many other good things, they are worn in the service of the public. They are, however, part of the book, and were produced by those princes of engraving the Brothers Dalziel, who worked not only with Doyle but also with Millais, Holman Hunt, Arther Hughes and other great illustrators of the 'sixties. Under the circumstances the publishers of the present edition felt that readers would prefer them with all their technical imperfections to new illustrations by another hand.
