Because the aim of this study was to find answers relating to the phenonmenon of demon possession from the Synoptic Gospels and the Acts of the apostles in an exegetic-theological manner, it was important to firstly find an acceptable exegetic method. After studying various exegetical methods, a decision was made te make use of a method-pluralism. The absolute authority of the Holy Bible was maintained as a basis for this study. This prevents any arbitrariness in relation to the exegetic process. The correct understanding of the New Testament information, within their context, necessitated a background study regarding the Jewish demonology, as a basic exegetical principle. The beliefs about demons in the Jewish religion were found to have many similarities to the phenomenon of demon possession in the New Testament. Certain similar beliefs and opinions were found.
