This book is the moving autobiography of the author of Cry the Beloved Country and several other books which illuminate the political and social history of South Africa in this century. Born in Pietermaritzburg, the child of deeply religious parents, Alan Paton has regarded himself as striving always towards that holy mountain spoken of by Isaiah, where none shall hurt or destroy. He moved from his strict Christadelphian upbringing, through the Methodist Church, to become and remain an Anglican. Driven by faith and idealism, enthusiasm and ambition, he applied himself to the teaching of science, and from his early 30s to a continuing struggle against injustice and in support of liberal causes.
