The department of development Aid commissioned a house-to-house sample survey in February 1990 among those fourteen years and older and resident in major districts in the six self-governing states (Lebowa, Gazankulu, KwaZulu, Qwaqwa, KaNgwane, and KwaNdebele). The focus was on the nature and prevalence of the use of alcohol and various other chemical substances, as well as on risk factors for problems relating to the intake of the substances of concern.
