The Kerkenboek van de Caap van goede hope is the oldest document of the Christian Church in South Africa that has been preserved. The manuscript [here transcribed] is a collection of four Registers of the Church ... that cover the years 1665 to 1695: of baptisms, communicants admitted to the Lord's Supper, marriages, and resolutions of the consistory. Eleven ministers kept these records meticulously and entrusted them to their succesor. Their respective handwritings have been identified, opening windows to research of the years of their service, on the elders and deacons, their interaction with the civil council of the Cape of Good Hope. The many names put the old and young, the European people and the men and women of color in the context of the emerging Christian Church -- Publisher, rear cover.
Baptismal register = doopregister ; Communicants = Lidmateregister ; Marriages = huweliksregister ; Resolutions = Notule -- Appendices. Two forms of subscription with samples of handwriting and signatures ; Letter of the consistory to classis Amsterdam, 22 March 1666 ; Resolution of 22 March 1666 ; Letter of the classis Amsterdam to the consistory at the Cape, 6 September 1679 ; Provincial synod of North Holland on the baptism of slave children ; Zacharias Wagenaer's testament, 1667-1668 -- Scans of actual Kerkenboek.
