Introduction -- The educational technique and conditions of observation -- Discovery, reasoning, and thought : theoretical analysis -- Discovery, reasoning, and thought : records -- Biological interests : general -- Biological interests : records -- Four sample weeks -- Summary of activities -- Appendix : children's "why" questions by Nathan Isaacs.

This volume is based upon the records of work carried on at The Malting House School for young children, at Cambridge, in the years from October, 1924 to Christmas, 1927. Very few and strictly psychological records of the behaviour of a ground of young children, over long periods and under relatively free conditions, are so far available. The data gathered from our group of children do in fact throw light upon the intellectual and the social aspects of mental development. For this first volume, the discussions center on those aspects of the school life and of the methods used which are relevant to the theoretical problems under the topic of discovery, reasoning, and thought. These topics were chosen because of their intrinsic theoretical importance in genetic psychology at present.
